Questions about the Fun with Phonics TV programmes
When and where are the TV programmes being shown?
Details can be found on http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/guide/primary
How do the new Words and Pictures TV programmes differ from those that have been made in the past?
The new programmes have been made specifically to suit the new framework, with one programme for each phoneme, which are then blended for reading and segmented for spelling. They are ideal for first teaching of phonemes. The older TV programmes, on the other hand, focus on specific areas in phonics - long vowels, CVC words, blends and clusters - and are more useful to support and complement learning once first teaching has been carried out.
Do the old Words and Pictures TV programmes fit the new framework?
There are some differences in approach between the old TV programmes and the new framework; for example, blends and clusters bring groups of phonemes together, rather than teaching each individually. However, schools might still choose to use the DVDs once children have grasped the individual letter sounds.
